How to block AIM

- (28 day trial)

You can quite easily add more applications and web sites as they become a nuisance in the future.

Students and employees do not realise that TerminatorX is running, but the selected banned applications just disappear when they try to use them.

You can find out who is trying to use programs or web sites that you have banned. TerminatorX Monitor shows 'Terminated' programs on a computer located anywhere on your network - for example a Technician's workstation. The details are shown in 'real time' as the attempts are made. This screenshot shows a typical view:

Blocking AIM ports

According to AOL's own site :

Q: Does AIM work behind firewalls?

A: Normally it works, but it all depends on how your network administrator set up the firewall. In case it doesn't work with default setup, first check to see if you need proxy server when connect to Internet (check on Netscape browser: Edit->Preference->Advanced->Proxies), if so go to Setup->Connect in Sign on window to set it. Second, if you don't have any proxy, and default port 5190 doesn't work, then just change it to 80 or some other popular port number
from Setup --> Connect in the 'Sign on' window.

Also from AOL's site:

AOL recommends opening TCP  and UDP ports 5190 - 5193, TCP port 443 and ICMP type-3 code-4 "Fragmentation Needed".

Blocking AOL Instant Messenger in all its forms means blocking port 80.

You will stop Internet Explorer showing ANY web sites if you do!

Try TerminatorX......  give it a go for free - no personal or credit cards details needed.

Information from other sources

To block AIM you should block ports 5190-5193 plus perhaps port 21, the FTP port - see here.

Apparently though, if you stop access to these ports, it appears that AIM will use ports 13, 23, 80, 113, etc.

It gets worse. Even if you block those ports, your students or employees will just switch to using AIM Express, eBuddy or eMessenger - which are browser based and can be used to access AOL Instant Messenger messages. You can not block AIM Express's or eMessenger's port without preventing Internet Explorer accessing any web sites.
